Special Lunar Event

On Sep. 28, many people around the globe will be able to witness a “supermoon” total lunar eclipse. Scientists say that it is very rare to see the two phenomena - a supermoon and total lunar eclipse - occurring at the same time. Such an eclipse has not occurred in the past three decades, and will not happen again until 2033.
A supermoon is a full moon at the point in its orbit when it is closest to the Earth. Supermoons appear 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than full moons.

Meanwhile, a total lunar eclipse is when the surface of the eclipsed moon is completely obscured due to a perfect alignment of the moon, Earth, and sun. Unlike other types of lunar eclipses, the moon in the state of a total eclipse appears reddish in color. This is why it is also called a “blood moon.”
Unfortunately, it will be hard to spot the special moon in Korea. However, observers in other regions, including the Americas and Europe, will be lucky enough to see the unusual event.

9월 28일, 세계의 많은 사람들이 “슈퍼문” 개기 월식을 목격할 수 있게 됐습니다. 과학자들은 슈퍼문과 개기 월식 이 두 현상이 함께 일어나는 것이 매우 드문 일이라고 말합니다. 이런 종류의 월식은 지난 30년간 한번도 일어난 적이 없었고 2033년까지는 다시 일어나지 않을 것입니다. 슈퍼문은 달의 궤도에서 지구에 가장 가까운 곳에 다다른 보름달입니다. 슈퍼문은 보름달보다 14% 더 크고 30% 더 밝습니다. 한편, 개기 월식이란 달, 태양, 지구가 완벽한 일직선으로 늘어져 월식이 진행되며 달이 완벽하게 가려질 때 일어나는 현상입니다. 다른 종류의 월식과는 다르게, 개기월식일 때의 달은 붉은 색으로 보입니다. 이것이 개기월식일 때의 달이 “블러드문”이라고 불리는 이유입니다. 유감스럽게도, 그 특별한 달을 한국에서 목격하기는 어려울 것입니다. 그러나, 아메리카지역이나 유럽 등에 있는 사람들은 그 드문 일을 목격하는 행운을 누릴 수 있을 것입니다.
